Urban vs Rural phenomenon

Eberhard Schrempf

I would say that 80 percent of the creative industries are concentrated in an urban centre, in this case in Graz, and about 15-20 percent are based outside of it, in towns with 15,000 – 20,000 inhabitants. In Styria the distances between the towns are small, so this is not a problem. No city in Styria is more than one and a half hour away from Graz. Creative industries are predominantly an urban phenomenon, and the size of the city can be an important factor. However, today the location of a company in an urban centre is not decisive. Thanks to the internet and social networks you can easily be based in a small village and still be successful. If you’re connected to the world, that is if you have access to media and to the internet and you have contacts in urban centres in Europe and the world, then there is no problem. It can even make things easier because life in small villages is cheaper than e.g. in New York, Berlin or London. There are hence advantages to being based in a small town and co-operate with larger cities, like Graz for example.
