Rotterdam 2001

Leo van Loon

In 2001 Rotterdam was the European Capital of Culture. The year was a real breakthrough for the city. Rotterdam introduced itself to the world, and to Europe and the Netherlands in particular, as a new city where innovation and culture play an important role and which has more to it than the docks. You could feel the energy. New businesses and events were established; you had the feeling that there is so much happening. But when the year was over, things faded away. Although after some time things picked up again, the period of slump was definitely a negative effect of 2001. After a really good, lively year, the city suddenly became quiet. It is certainly something other European Capitals of Culture should be wary of.
