Budget for development of creative industries

Carlos Martins

In this region of Portugal - North of Portugal – we are absorbing big part of regional development funds and we managed to get a specific budget for development of creative industries in terms of clustering the activities and supporting this field. The European Development Agency represented in Portugal on regional level invests more that 70 million euros into this program for current 7-year European framework. We have kind of a special access to this funding for our cultural program – it is funded in 70% out of this budget, so 18 million euros came from this regional strategy for creative industries. Part of our program is about trying to create series of new infrastructures in Guimarães - ecosystem where creation can produce economic and social value. We understand that if we have this support, of course we have to give something back to the region  - some added value in terms of job creation, in terms of wealth creation. I think the region is happy with this strategy since it steels the flagship project and when it comes to the creative industries agenda, the European Capital of Culture is always named as the successful example in the region.
