Values of culture and creative industries

Johanna Skantze

The media industries are definitely very strong in Sweden. In Malmö, in the South-West of Sweden we have media cluster called Media Evolution - a members-organization gathering about 200 companies ranging from music, photography to digital communications. The way the cluster has developed during the last 7 years is also a result of a strong collaboration between private and public sector. Besides the sphere of media, the gaming industry is very strong in Sweden. We have a number of successful cases. One of them would be Massive Entertainment that we found here in Malmö, another one is Tarsier Studios based in the South-East of Sweden. Postproduction (as part of the film industry) is another strong area in our country. We have a postproduction cluster close to Stockholm which is also the result of a strong collaboration between public sector and private companies. Another strength of Sweden is communications - we have two schools of communication, both of them based in Stockholm in Hägersten, with branches on a global scale. Students from both schools - Berghs School of Communications and Hyper Island - are extremely attractive for companies all over the world. Then we also have our own “Circus de Soleil” and it’s called Circus Cirkör - also globally known. All these industries that we gather under the term of culture and creative industries are very important because they create jobs and economic growth but they also create content and meaning and that is another value. It creates a society that stimulates and inspires people and from my point of view that´s why the culture and creative industries are important from both perspectives - economic and  social/culture perspective. And obviously these industries also play very important role in building the image about Sweden. Probably it was these industries that were essential for us reaching the first place when various institutes and magazines rated the most creative countries in the world. These industries help to build the image of Sweden as a creative and innovative country - a place where you might want to invest or you might want to have a branch of your global company. But it also builds the image of Sweden as an attractive place for visitors - and that forms close connection between the culture and creative industries and the tourism sector.
